Introduction
On March 1, 2025, the presidential transition will take place in Uruguay. According to current regulations, when the inauguration of a new government coincides with this date, it is declared a paid public holiday. The following outlines the most relevant aspects regarding the application of this holiday.

1. No obligation to attend work
Employees are not required to report to work on this date. If they do not attend, they still receive payment for the day as if they had worked (paid holiday).

2. Exceptions (Decree No. 201/979)
Certain activities that cannot be interrupted due to their nature—such as health services or continuous industrial processes—may require employee attendance. In these cases, employers can require workers to be present on March 1, even though it is a non-working holiday.

3. Payment if work is performed

  • Monthly employees: Receive their regular monthly salary plus an additional day’s pay (calculated as monthly salary ÷ 30).

  • Daily wage employees: Receive double pay.

Conclusion
In summary, March 1, 2025, is a paid public holiday in observance of the presidential transition, guaranteeing the right to remunerated rest for most workers. However, in essential sectors that must continue operating, employers may require attendance while paying the applicable supplements established by law. This ensures both the continuity of essential services and the protection of employee labor rights.
